Programmer/Tuner for my 04

Got a 2004 f150 with the 5.4 with 131k on it. Still runs like the day I got it at 60k. I don't know an abundance about tuning. My question is, at what point should I get one, and which should I choose? I plan on continually upgrading the truck as funds allow. I like sports cars, however i like this truck more than sports cars... if that tells you the direction ill be taking... Should I wait to buy? I'd like to custom tune it.

I bought a tuner for mine years ago to help improve gas mileage. I've got three tunes; economy, towing and aggressive street. I've never run the street program as it was set up for 93 octane and I never purchase higher octane fuel. As I remember I picked up about 1mpg when I loaded the economy tune. I ran that for years and I know for sure it helped the mpg. I recently switched to the tow tune and like it better as it holds first gear a little longer on take off. The mpg is the same in tow or economy unless of course I'm towing. It's just in my head but I would think that it's better on the transmission with as many miles as mine has. I seem to remember that when I first installed the tune the truck no longer down shifted on grades on the interstate. It will shift down if it is a really steep grade but overall the drivability is much better than before.

At the moment I don't have the information on who made my tuner but I could find out if needed.

For our year trucks the Edge Evo tuner is very popular.
It makes the shifts crisper, increases power and torque, many other uses, may even help the MPG.
Look for one on Craigs List, Ebay, this and or other forums used for less than $250.

Thanks for the replies. I was looking at the sct x4. I've heard that's a very good tuner for the 5.4 ford.
