Programmer for 2002 F250 5.4 V8 Gas

While the hardware is important, the actual tune is the critical element. I stronlgy urge you to get custom tunes.
I would not purchase a programmer for MPG gains. At best it's 50-50 and really depends on how you drive, your truck, where you drive, etc. Even if you do see a gain, 1-2 MPG would be max.
Any of the companies listed below can provide you with safe and reliable custom tunes and great customer support.

I got a tuner from 5 Star Tuning and have been very impressed with what Mike has done there. The performance tune is great when you want to have a little fun and hit it hard. My truck has 4:11's and it'll jump from a roll in the performance tune, the economy tune shifts super smooth and early and it's easier to keep the mpg's up, the tow tune is great for towing and pulls up the shift point and doesnt shift early making it easier to pull up those hills, this is from my experience, good luck

Custom tunes are great in all.....but are not for the masses. Often too expensive for what you really get.
A good hand held tuner with some flexibiltiy will get you similar results.
For the year of your truck ( no offense ment), and the miles that could be on it, I'd suggest saving some coin and checking out eaby for a used Superchips 1715 or a Diablo Predator equivalent. I've had both, and the Predator has more flexibilty in adjusting for spark advance and the such. Finding a used tuner on the older trucks can be done, it just takes a bit of patience.
Ultimately it's your truck, and your choice.
Personally I'd have a awful hard time springing for custom tunes when $150 will get you a nice used tuner off of ebay.

An SCT Xcal 3 with 3 custom tunes from 5 Star costs the same or less shipped than off the shelf tuners from another retailer.
I had the SCT SF2 on my truck with SCT's canned tunes. Later I converted it to an XCal2 and bought 5 Stars tunes. The difference is night and day.
I have a lot of experience with an off the Shelf Diablosport Predator and the canned tunes are horrible and produced an excessive amount of spark knock. The Diablosport Predator is a good unit with a good software base however it needs custom tunes.
The only tuner I'd put on my Ford gasser is an SCT or Diablosport with custom tunes.
Do not expect much in mpg department however you can expect very nice gains even on 87 fuel with a good custom tune.

Very incorrect.

Actually that depends.
The bad thing about off the shelf tuners is that they are "one size fits all programming", now you can tweak it a little bit here and there, but it's still within the confines of whatever predominate strategy that they have for the base programming. Which may or may not be the strategy that your truck actually has.
For instances, there are some people that really liked how Edge and BullyDog products work, my truck shifted horribly with the BullyDog(I never used Edge), it just didn't like it at all. "You" might have success and really like the "stock" tunes from a company, but then again you might not. If it's a might not then that $150 that you spent on ebay will also have to be applied to the next tuner you get(if you get another one) to factor in the mistake that was made.
I wouldn't advocate anything but custom. In my opinion, if you are going to do it do it right the first time.
