Another Help with GCWR please

Hey folks,

I have a 1997 F250 460 4x4. Short Bed. E40d. 35inch Toyo Mud tires. Dana 60 in the front with a reverse shackle kit. 410 gears but will most likely be upping those soon to 456 or 488.

Stock leafs in the rear with a 4 inch block. I also have diesel leafs up front but would like to change that… too stiff.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

John

The GCWR is a combination of what the frame, axles, and suspension are designed to carry.

In your case you would need to see what all the stock numbers are. then figure out what the new tire capacity, wheel capacity, spring rates are. The frame is still the frame, nothing has been done. Gearing will only help get it moving like stock based on larger tires, your axles are still rated at the weight on the factory decal. That will be your biggest factor, even going to a stronger axle will not help the load capabilities of the bearings in the axle or wheel.

It is still going to be regulated by the tag on the door from the manufacturer if you ever get stopped and checked. keep in mind also that you are also adding weight to the truck going to larger components which will ultimately take away from your GCW.

Thanks Toyman,

I believe I tracked you and agree for the most part. D60 was the entire assy, not just axel.

Also, my "tag" does not list GCWR which led to my post.

My Travel trailer has a dry weight of only 3335lbs and my SXS weighs in at 1010lbs wet. I still want to do the calculations before I try to pull with the SXS in the back of the truck.

Looking for scales near me but am striking out.

Still looking for the answer to GCWR.

For what you want to do that way you should be fine. Most you might have is 45-4800 with the trailer loaded. Set of airbags, make sure you have a brake controller and it works properly and give yourself plenty of room to stop.

I agree but hope someone can tell me at least what the stock GCWR is.

I do have a brake controller that works well. I have been towing this rig for about 7 plus years now... with some load in the back too but not with a hitch extension.

I talked for some time with a tech from Reese earlier today... he may have talked me into a Weight Distribution System with the Hitch extension (Only 14").

The only thing it showed back in that day was GVWR which is 8800, The manufacturers did not really advertise tow ratings on the older trucks.

I would say that with the 460 it would tow 10K, with the 5.8L it would be rated at 7000#

Those are purely guesses and trying to dive way back into the memory archives of my brain when I worked at a truck dealership in the 90's. Those max numbers would have been with a weight distribution hitch...

Thank you Gentlemen!

I think I am going to go with the WDH. Even if I can get away with out it. I am anxious to see/feel the difference.

Do either of you know the vehicles wet or dry weight?

I have no idea. CAT scales can usually be found at Pilot, Truck Stop America, or Love's.
This should help:

Those stations are not by me. I had not heard of CAT scales before. I went to their website and there is a "CAT" scale about 10-15 miles away.

Thanks wrvond

I think my '95 manual says 16000Lbs GCWR for any ford truck with a 460/4.10 combination.

I'm going to edit to add that I downloaded the 1997 Owners Guide from Ford. According to it the GCWR for any automatic 4x4 truck with the 460/4.10 combo is 18500 lbs.
