I just bought an 01 F650 with 7.3/4 spd Allison combo. I am afraid the application I am planning for the truck will go over the 26k gvw by 3k or so when fully loaded (2000 gal. vac tank). My questions are:
1. Can I get the gvw sticker raised to 30k or so if the needed upgrades are made (I'm in Ks)?
2. What upgrades would be needed? My truck has spring suspension and hydraulic 4 wheel disc brakes.
I notice the truck has a heavy double frame. Is this truck the same as a 750 but with lower gvw so no cdl needed? I have a cdl so no worry there. Hopefully if I can do this legally the only work needed may be more leaf springs. Any ideas?
Once the rating hits 26,001 you'll have to have cdl but sounds like you already have it. Tire ratings will be listed on the tires themselves in parenthesis after the air pressure. I'm pretty sure you can't go over 26,001 mark without having that third axle but not sure...I know the max per rear axle is 20,000 so unless you can upgrade the front as well to a 10,000 you'd have to add another rear axle. If you ever get weighed and they weigh just the rear axle weight with one axle you can get burned pretty hard if it's over.
ok thanks. I know lots of single axle trucks have gvw's of 33,000. Many of the f750s are rated for that. If I could just get mine up to 30k I would be ok. Adding leaf springs on back should allow that axle up to 20k, not sure how to get the front axle from 8500 to 10k, maybe just extra leaves there too.
I'm not 100% sure on this, but it may be just as easy as upping your registration to 33,000 lbs. You've got the tires to handle the weight.
I'm just wondering if the axle ratings on that sticker show the actual rating it's rated for, or if it's actually got weaker springs for a better ride?
Sorry can't help ya much more than that, might have to park it next to a 750 and compare axles, and springs. Maybe talk to a truck shop that does body and frame modifications , may be able to help. Or your friendly DOT may have some insite.
I don't think you can just get the registration changed. We used to be able to change the gvw by changing springs but I don't think that will get you up to 30K so axles will most likely have to be swapped. You might want to call the DOT because I think the paperwork is a real pain. Are you installing the body or is a body company doing it? If its a body company they will know what all is involved.

I'm doing the same thing to a 2 ton dump and I was told you will need to have a certification from a mechanic/ shop that the truck will comply with braking, handling, suspension, etc. and not be a hazard to the general public when making the increase. If you get stopped by the DOT and portable scales or at a weigh station and your truck ID tag is at a lighter weight you might be screwed. you might be able to add a couple leaf springs, after a certain point the axle beam, hubs, bearings, steering components, etc. might fail. You'll have to run the numbers and ask an expert how much you can max out the components.
Mine has air brakes, I wouldn't trust hydraulic brakes with anything over 26k# myself. Some older Fords had issues with brake line failure from rust and deterioration and depending on the style of booster you have. Changing hyd. brakes to air can be expensive and a major PITA.
What I'm doing is, I bought a junk truck with a higher GVWR and I'm swapping the axles and cab. Also you have to remeber when you increase the axles, etc. your tare weight and license plates will increase as well.
Can you add a "tag" axle?
