Rainned heavily up here in mass two nights ago and 87 f150 302 efi will not start, first thought is the distributor got some sort of moisture in it, not sure how to test for this without taking off the cap and wires. Is it safe to pull the plug off and try to start to see if there is a spark or should i just take the wire off and leave the plug in. If there is a spark here then the distributor is fine, right? Let me know of any other suggestions. Any help is very appreciated.
I replaced the distributor cap, rotor, plug wires, and coil...still no start? Anyone have any ideas about what my next step should be? Battery, starter, and alternator are fine. Reached a dead end. Thanks for any suggestions
Is there spark to the plugs ?
I would remove one of the plugs, and set the grounded part of the plug on a grounded surface.
Then I would turn the vehicle over and have someone look to see if there is spark to the plug.
It could be a bad COIL too...... The coil can be tested at a local shop.
Best of luck,
Gene
I have now fixed my no spark problem, but i now dont hear the fuel pump start when i turn the key to on...i have no voltage at the inertia switch either, where should i check for voltage next? Should there be continuity between the battery and the positive side of the switch when the key is on?
I just jumpered 12 volts to the inertia switch and heard the fuel pump start, does this mean the problem is a ground between the switch and the battery or is there something else between the switch and battery. Does anyone know exactly how the inertia switch is wired into the fuel pump circuit? thanks for any help?
Has anyone had out there had trouble with an eec relay or fuel pump relay being damaged during a hard rain...if so what effect does this have on starting, what would be the symptons if one of these relays was bad? I have found no power at the inertia switch when the key is in the on position, belt spins but no start. Thanks
I know that the inertia switch turns the fuel pump off when the truck has hit something.
I usually unplug the inertia switch, and run the engine till it dies, to release the pressure on the fuel system when I change the fuel filter on my 1996 f150.
Best of luck.

Hi,
I had a similar problem, and I found the wire connector to the fuel pump relay to be corroded to a nice shade of green.
I put a gauge on the fuel rail, and after chaging the wire connector, and generallly cleaning the relay I noted the fuel pump went on and pressure returned to the fuel rail, the vehicle then started.
Good Luck,
Tom
INCOMUNICADO...is your fuel pump relay located next to the eec power relay above the shock tower on the drivers side? What were the symptons of your bad connector, did you have spark? I have almost narrowed my problem down to either the eec or fuel pump relay and just need a little more info. Do you know which wire into the relay it was that caused your no start condition, was it the red wire? Any help you can give is great.

I had to track down a no start condition after rainy weather too, and I found a bad relay. You can check them with an ohmmeter. A Haynes manual will tell you how. You can also use the ohmmeter to check the continuity of the wiring. Mine turned out to be the EEC power relay, and it apparently took the EEC unit with it when it shorted out. (Hmm, grumpy face doesn't seem to be working for me, but trust me I'm making one.) Fortunately, the relays are not terribly expensive. Check 'um/change 'um and hopefully that will get your fuel pump running. (You already proved the pump itself is operational.) So, getting power to pump should do it.
Hi Bettamanpj
Sorry I didn't get back sooner, we're in a major power outage here in the northeast.
The relay which I was reffering to is mounted on a bracket attached to the air cleaner. Its about 1 1/2 X 3" and is covered by a black plastic cover.
Sorry I do'nt remember the color of the wire, but if need be, I can take it apart again and check for you.
The symptom I had was after parking the truck, in the driveway the next day it just would not start.
Good luck
Thanks alot for your help incommunicado...I'll pulled the fuel pump relay and the coil resistance was a little off but not too bad, so i pulled the eec and sure enough there was infinite resistance across the coil, so hopefully the relay didn't take anything else with it when it went, ill find out today when i put in the new one.
