exhaust upgrade
I'm planning on installing a 4" straight pipe exhaust on here in the next few weeks. Is there much of a drone sound with this setup?
Right now my truck has stock exhaust back to the muffler. The muffler is a Gibson 3.5" inlet 4" outlet and at 50-60 mph has a pretty loud drone that is annoying.

It depends on the definition of drone. I will tell you, these trucks are loud straight piped, even worse 4 inch straight piped. I have been running stock exhaust straight piped for 8 years. I am eagerly awaiting my new SS 4 inch Proflow exhaust with muffler. I am tired of my truck being so loud.

My son did a muffler delete and did not go to 4-inch, and personally, I think the truck sounded awful... like someone was trying too hard! To me, it's sort of like a diesel version of a ricer f@rt can.
Then again, it's not my truck, and I give everyone plenty of room to do whatever they want to their trucks as long as they don't put themselves or other people's safety at risk.

My 3.5" straight pipe has no drone but it is loud. Out the tailpipe.
If I went 4" I'd run a straight though design muffler like one if these Diamond Eye 4inch Aluminized Quiet Tone Louvered Resonator 40040x

I agree with Pete they sound awful... Until you're "gettin it" then it sounds great.
Noise is mostly about age and age should be discussed by each and everyone who posts on an exhaust thread. I'm young enough and half deaf so letter rip! Then you have the "older guys" that a loud exhaust will disrupt their train of thought while there playing solitary in the front seat.... Why who knows, just saying.

This brings up another question. I've been told some truck insulation packages varies on different trim levels.
I ask because my Lariat is not that loud in the cab while if you're outside while I drive by you will give me a dirty look. I get them all the time.
I know it helps that its a crew cab long bed so the tail pipe is like 15' away but if you have an XL or XLT do you have as well of an insulated cab as my Lariat?

I, too, have driven past people walking in my neighborhood early in the morning before the truck engine is really warmed up and smoothed out, and I often get dirty looks. There is one woman in particular who simply covers her ears as I approach and drive past her, and there is another guy who mouths out "TOO LOUD" as I drive by him. All of this with a stock engine and stock exhaust which is tightly sealed with bellowed up-pipes and no exhaust leaks.
In addition to my XLT F250, I also have an Excursion (Eddie Bauer trim). The Excursion came with an excellent soundproofing package, and the XLT F250 not so much. My wife, in fact, having ridden in both for years, had never realized that they both sounded exactly alike from outside the vehicle because she had never heard me drive off in the Excursion (her vehicle). When she heard me drive off in it one day (several years after buying and driving it), she was absolutely shocked at how loud it is on the outside and has come to hate driving it because she doesn't like the idea of being a "diesel driving mama".
What all this tells me is that it is definitely possible to use something like Fat Mat interior sound insulation sheets to deaden the noise inside the cabs of our trucks, and a number of guys in here have stripped out the interior to quiet down the cab interior. Best cost estimates I've seen range anywhere from about $120-$250, depending on which material you use and how extensive of a job you do, as well as whether or not it is a single cab, extended cab, or crew cab format.
To answer your question, though, I'm not sure if the trucks received varying levels of sound insulation between the various trim packages, but I expect there is some degree of "upgrading" as the trim packages get higher. Certainly, carpet will have an impact on the issue.
