NP435 leak

Hi guys,

I did a stupid thing, and I need some input.

I drove my truck on the road in 4H with the hubs locked. *hangs head in shame* I know, I know... stupid. I didn't go faster than 40mph.

Specs: 1978 F-250 supercab. 390 put in a few years ago, which has had a weird vibration ever since. Local shop guys decided it was likely main bearing, and I decided to ignore it as they suggested. I have owned this truck through three motors, and have changed all the fluids regularly. I don't go off-road a lot, but when I do, it's generally pretty rough stuff. I had the tranny completely gone through by a very reputable shop back in 2001, at which time they cracked the transfer case at my request and found it in perfect condition, not needing anything other than fresh oil. Both diffs were gone through as well, and I had the entire suspension re-built to correct a horrible lift job done by a previous owner. (I constantly broke U-joints due to incorrect angles) and had air shocks put it too, for heavier hauling. New ring gear as well, and the main long drive shaft was completely rebuilt and balanced too. NP435 tranny, NP205 transfercase

Back to the incident of stupidity:

Noticed the leak when I unlocked the hubs. Definitely gear oil, and quite a lot of it. Put it in 2H, drove home. Refilled the tranny with nearly two quarts of oil, drove it in 4L locked hubs in the pasture, and then in 2H unlocked on the road. No leaking!

So.... do I have a problem, or not?

Something else: The weird vibration is gone. I'm thinking perhaps I had something (like the bell housing)not quite lined up, and with the over-pressure/torque it moved? I don't know.... any ideas?

Also, there are NO weird noises, and everything works as it should.

J

Hey, sounds like a + + to me.... I never have that kind of luck at fixin stuff! I'd say keep an eye on it and drive it. Those gear boxes are damn tuff.
