So I changed the oil, and that fixed the romping when I start it. A few days ago, I noticed a different vibration when accelerating, and not all the time but sometimes when I let off the gas, and especially in 4th gear, it bucks. The rpms look like they stay the same, and if I push the clutch or accelerator it stops. Is that a tranny problem? I took it by autozone and no codes were in the comp.
So I figured it out. I stopped driving the truck, and I'm glad I did. I crawled under it yesterday to check the U-jpints, and noticed that The 4x4 adapter tail housing cracked all the way around. The T-case was literally held in by the drive lines.

That sucks man. I have fixed several of those. Are you gonna fix it yourself? If so, and you have never had a ZF apart, then you need to know that these are rear loaded transmissions. Everything in the transmission is connected to the rear extension housing. It all has to come out, the internals of the trans put on the new rear extension housing and then put back in the case. You may wanna consider doing new bearings, seals, and snycros while you have it apart. T&B Transmission is the best place I have found to get those rear extension housings. The ones for the S5-47 cost $100 more than the ones for the S5-42. They are cast slightly different. If your truck is a '96 or '97 and has the original trans, then it is an S5-47. You should look at the tag on the driver side of the trans case to be sure though. There is always the chance that the trans could have been swapped out at some point by a previous owner.
In pulling the transmission, I saw that the cross member was loose.. I don't know how I missed that, but I did. Also, the truck was an automatic originally. Someone at some point re wired everything, and put that plastic heat shield stuff on all the wires. My question is, can I weld that rear housing back together? Has anyone tried that? Eventually, when I get some cash, I'd be buying a replacement. But would welding it work?

Welding it may work. I've seen the bell housings on the ZFs welded when they crack, but never seen anyone try to weld the rear extension housing.
