99 E-350 SD Reverse Light Failure

ok I'm at a loss here. my reverse lights just stopped working one day. i checked the under hood 30 amp fuse and was fine. i did check the bulbs and aside from being dirty they are intact filaments. the transmission range sensor 15 amp fuse. soon as i shift in reverse the fuse blows even a 30 amp fuse. any advice?

Thanks in Advance, Alice

The transmission still shifts into and out of selected gears correct?

My EVTM for that years shows just one fuse, #12 (15 amp) for the transmission range sensor which I think is the one you say blows each time its moved out of park. Only that sensor is between the power source (fuse #12 Central Junction Box, inside cabin) and the actual reverse lamps.

Either the sensor is bad or a short has developed somewhere along the path leading to the actual lights. If the sensor is known to be good check the connectors and wiring and look for chafing or other possible signs wires are making contact with a ground source.

HTH, please let us know what you discover.

when trans is cold it jerks from first to second gear. but once warmed up it shifts all gears slowly taking 1 to 2 seconds to shift. but it is drivable an take it up to 75 mph regularly.

thanks in advance, alice

I can't help too much about the jerking into gear thing but I'm leaning towards the sensor beginning to fail.

Hopefully Mark Kovolsky sees this thread and can lend his advice.

Sorry Alice!

is it a fairly easy part to replace? I'm handicapped by a bad back so i can't put a lot pressure into it. so could i do it with a basic ratchet set and some penetrating oil?

I'm pretty sure its mounted on the side of the transmission---back in the day we've have called it a "neutral safety switch" if that helps.

If so replacing it will mean lifting the van a bit or crawling underneath for access. I don't believe the bolts would be so tight they'd be too tough to remove. That being said I've never done this so can't say for sure.
