Auto trans shifting

My auto trans acts up from time to time. It down shifts at the wrong time, won't go into overdrive unless I speed up and let off. It's been fine for weeks and then it will act up. I'm thinking its electronic? My tester is at home, we've been away for 3 months, so I'll check for codes asap. Your thoughts?

My thoughts are that you need the codes.

My scanner is an OB2! Won't work on a 97 7.3. What are you using to scan?

I'll post another thread on this so it gets looked at but the truck seemed to skip under load. The scanner for the diesel should pick up on this too

sounds to me like it could possibly be the neutral safety switch (mlps)

on the drivers side of the trans

Don't see how...neutral safety is for starting in park or neutral and not allowing it to start in a gear.

That sounds unlikely to me, but if we had the codes I could make a really good guess.

the neutal safety switch does more than that

I was having a problem with my overdrive not working and the light would flash,it would slip all forward gears randomly.

I checked and replaced the mlps and haven't had a problem since.

It does a lot more than an old neutral safety switch.

How do I get the codes? I have a scanner but for OB2 only. I thought Auto Zone could scan for me but was told here they they couldn't do it. What do I need for a scanner where can I go. It might also discover why the truck vibrates with a load or acceleration. Taking my foot out of it will stop it from doing so.

You probably have a bad/weak injector.

Most consumer scan tools will not work on a 1997 7.3 PSD, despite it having the OBD-2 port. You'll either need to get a specialized scan tool, or bring it to a dealer.

I was afraid of that! I wonder if they know what to do for an 18 year old truck?! or if they can even still plug into an old truck and get the codes.
