Quick (stupid) Question

At the hardware store and I didn't bring one with me, need a replacement retainer nut one of four that holds the Motorcraft 2150 onto stock intake manifold--can someone help me with nut size and thread pitch? Thanks!

I have seen these 4 sizes used:

1/4"-20
1/4"-28
5/16"-18
5/16"-24

I know that does not give you the exact answer, but...

Big help, the quarter inch rings a bell so now I just need to buy 2 sizes even though it's probably 20 tpi I'm not gonna tempt my fate. Thanks AK Ford!

If you are still around there, I would buy all 4 just to be safe. 4 of each size should be pretty inexpensive.

Upon more research, it seems 5/16" 18/24 (the stud is -18 on the manifold side and -24 on the carb side) is a more common size. I think that is true for aftermarket, not sure for OEM.

Thanks for the update

I have often thought of pitching the double ended stud for a piece of all thread with the same course size all the way up.. Haven't had to yet..

I believe they use the fine thread on the carb side for a flatter more even clamping force.

For mine it was the -24 all around. A couple of them were hard to marry on the first (quarter) turn or two, but after that glided right down to the carb base.

Note for the future warrior: I guess saved on the metal by going a nut size smaller on these original parts, my new nuts were 1/2" socket so I went and replaced them all so they'd be the same (orig. is 7/16" nut). I guess if you're making a couple million nuts a year that adds up to some savings...

I read into things a lot...

I believed they used a 7/16" hex diameter to facilitate using a smaller tool in a congested area. All pure speculation though.

Maybe, but call me a cynic. Having had two ME professors who came from US auto industry I would tend to believe the first cost drove that decision, Ford isn't in the business of making our lives easy taking their carburetor off. They're in the business of Q3 profits > Q2 profits > Q1 profits haha.

I will attest to the tight working space. Recommend for rear two nuts a quarter inch ratchet with 3 inch extension bar.

I am sure you are 100% correct. Point well taken.

Ford will do whatever it takes to make the assembly process quicker. Anything that is easy to do in service on a modern vehicle is coincidence.
