What brand and unit are you running? Best buy has several under 800 bucks. Does the GPS provide accurate location. How do the maps update. I'm trying to make my mind up and save my money by just using my phone. But I really want a different unit. Previous owner installed a cheap pioneer that is really hard to operate. I really want a backup camera for hooking up camper and boat
I have an older Kenwood that at the time was their flagship high end offering that cost a couple of grand.
The gps is horrible and basically useless, updates are overpriced
The phone interface is clumsy
The Bluetooth is glitchy
The DVD/cd player crapped out long ago
One volume button doesn't work
All of the control buttons are absurdly small and poorly lit
Technology moves so fast that it was basically outdated before they were finished installing it. My next HU will be a cheap disposable chi-com android unit I will throw in the trash like a bic lighter out of fluid lmao
Oh... The replacement $9.99 back up camera I ordered directly from China is vastly superior to the $159 Kenwood original camera
Kenwood DNX 6160. GPS antenna under dash.
Overall I give the unit a B+
Pluses: GPS works fine. Sound is good. HD reception is good. Ipod interface is good. Handsfree mic is good. Remote camera is good.
Negatives: No voice control for GPS. UI could use work. Bootup while heating glowplugs - Cutoff during starting - Reboot again sometimes results in a bad connection to the ipod.
The maps update via a mini SD card. About $100 a pop.
When testing the units in the store stand off to the left as if you are in the drivers seat. My unit does not allow for parallax and so if you press what looks like the buttons you are actually off to one side and the unit does not register the press. Gets to be a PITA when using the keypad and are bouncing down the road.
Does anyone have a unit that will let you keep your steering wheel controls?
And I've never had an issue with Pioneer head units.
I had a Alpine and and kept my steering wheel controls, but I believe it you can use any head unit and buy the plugs to use for the steering wheel controls.
I did a galaxy tab 3 in mine and love it. I have navi and facebook and youtube and internet and anything else u have on a tablet and its on a 4g lte network. Cost me about 100 bucks. Tablet was free with a service plan of 10 bucks a month and did a fiberglass template of it and use that to mount it and bought a clarion eq so i have a vol **** and 7v eq set up. Works great but u will need a 4ch tho. I have 2 4ch and a mono for my system. I also can run vehicle diagnostics while driving.
I have a Pioneer APP radio. it has DVD, back up camera and even a frt camera input. it has the capability to keep the steering wheel controls. it interfaces with an IPhone to run some apps. I run my dash command through it, GPS, and various other apps. I`ve used it once so far (The X doesn`t get driven much anymore, just trips). I love it!

A pumpkin android model. I will post the model later. Love it and only cost $300.

Does yours have dual zone capabilities? We have the Pioneer AVIC NEX 7000? and it doesn't appear to have it unless it is really well hidden. Blows my mind that it wouldn't as even the old stock one had it.
