Column shifter. The missing link?

I am using the original column shift linkage to shift the FMX trans in my 1952 F100. I used the 3-4 shift arm hooked to a cable. This set up works, but there is a couple inches of play in the shifter. Play is in column itself, not in cable set up. Does anyone know where I can look to eliminate this play? Thanks

There's probably only one place to look. The shifter tube moves the 2-3 lever thru a pin in the tube, that slides into a slot in the lever. The pin could be sloppy in the tube, or the pin fit in the slot could be sloppy, or both. See picture below.

Thanks, I'll check that. BTW meant 2-3 shift. Not a four speed.

If that's where it's sloppy, you could replace the pin with a bolt, and just lock it in position.

OK. Disassembled column shifter. Removed 1st and reverse shift arm completely. Removed pin for 2-3 shift arm and replaced with bolt and nut. Then tack welded that arm solid to shifter shaft. Play now gone. Thanks

Hard to believe a little play in that pin translates to nearly 3 inches at shifter. I simply replaced the pin with a 5/16 carriage bolt after grinding the square part round. Also had to grind flat part of bolt head for clearance. I welded shift arm to shaft also, but, don't think this step absolutely necessary . Performed this modification without removing steering column. Just removed shift assembly. No one makes floor shift for FMX and wanted column sift for more leg room and originality. Will try to post some pics tomorrow night.
