71' - 72' Rag Joint (Steering Coupler) - Replacement?
Applications:
1969/74 F100/250 2WD & F350 // 1975 F100/250 2WD & F350 with manual steering.
1969 E100/300 from serial number D68,001 // 1970/74 E100/300
With wheels off ground and most all new column parts installed with no shifter collar installed yet or horn parts steering wheel turns very, very easy , like butter !!! I will use this for now and buy correct coupler soon & reinstall later. I despise the small post in my current coupler ! I want big diameter post that fill up the slots in the coupler. They look much safer & robust.
JEFFFAFA THANK-YOU FOR contacts...
My conclusions are 1971 steering couplers are hard to buy from 3rd party vendors. Also I believe 1971 part numbers are different or weird for some reason, hard to explain. I think SOME vendors are selling some couplers listed for the incorrect years. Dorman tech told me they did not sell a 1971 FORD F-100 steering coupler. Now he may have been wrong , but I did call them in 2020 or 21 !!!
Now I think LARS may have realized this and came out with their 202 part number which may be right one.
All I know is I am tremendously happy I have almost got this steering column completely rebuild correctly.
Started out with the turn signal switch was broken, the brake and back-up lights are fried and back-up switch & bracket missing from an electrical short. The spot welded bearing holder/flange was broken and binding up the shift shaft, thus the shift levers would bid up and you had to get out of truck and beat them unstuck !!!!!!!!!
I have almost all new parts including shift tube and back-up parts, AND professional welded new bearing holder/ flange !!!

Thank-you all again .............PEACE & LUV & HAPPY - NEW YEAR 2022

Not sure if this is it... the kit looks exactly the same. Here are some pictures after i completed the upgrade which may give you some ideas.
Pretty sure someone like Jegs or Summit carry a ujoint that could be easily adapted without welding anything. Need go back and read more of the thread but not sure if you are considering a oem ford tilt column but if you are working on the rag joint and want tilt now is a good time to get it. I think tilt starts as a factory option beginning in 79? 79 Floor shifter column with tilt and power steering is very rare now adays
I didn't realize I wanted tilt until after I restored a floor shifting column from a 68 f250 and it doesn't have the greatest clearance with the bench seat upgrade using oem 72 slider brackets and a 88 full bench seat with center armrest and headrests
