71' - 72' Rag Joint (Steering Coupler) - Replacement?

1971 F100 Manual Steering

I know there has been threads on this topic before but I would like to know if any one has had success with a specific manufacture/part number.

From what I've read:
  1. Dorman 31004 has worked for some and not for others
  2. The Napa universial Ford repair kit requires some modification to work
  3. The original C9UZ-3A525A-A is unable to be sourced

Any help is much appreciated.
Also I will be having a local shop (Norfolk, VA) replace my king pins. Is there a recommended vendor?

Thanks Guys,
Trever T

I used one from the HELP section of the local Pepboys. It was just the disk. There were 2 size options and the larger one fit my 70 F100. It came with hardware to replace the rivets you have to cut/grind off the original part to replace the disk. Whole deal took about 30 minutes.

I think it once resembled that. Obviously it has seen better days. Just got the truck, so please excuse the massive amount of crud.

Did that part fit on your 1971-1972? What mfg/part number is that?

Note in your pictures, I see that the lower steering column shaft tube bearing look like it's in need of repacking. Or worse replacing if left as is the inner bearing flange will be warn away, which could cause a bigger problem while drive.

That clamp will slide down just enough to repack the bearing.
Big job to remove the column to replace the bearing but if it has be done then has to be. The bearing seat flange is just stamped out sheet metal tack welded in place. Those are replaceable from LMC or DC if you don't have their catalog there free online ordering..

Ps the lower & upper bearing are the same if you need replacements.

The bearings are suppose to have a rubber dust boot around them also that dry rots .

Orich,
Here is my upper/lower bearing replacement parts list below. Do you see any thing missing?

I could not find a rag joint on DC or LMC website that is made for a 1971-72.

It looks like your list of stuff has a bearings that have been replaced with a sealed type so no need for the black dust boot oem type one.

The flanges have to be spot welded into place, may be even steel pop rivets will hold the lower in.

Rock-Auto states a DORMAN 31004 replaces C9UZ-3A525A. A box appears on the same listing clearly states it is for a 1973-1979 F-100. The photo shows a coupler with threads all around the ring. This may be the one I bought that I am having trouble with proper fitment on my steering gear...........
NOW I see a LARS 202 LISTED as correct steering coupler for a 1971 F-100.......
