I've bolted on a few cast iron intakes with new 600 Holley 1850 carbs, plus one on a 312 and they all ran pretty decent right out of the box. I also think you have a vacuum leak. I have seen those leak under one or more intake runners if the gasket gets jostled installing the intake. Very easy to do if you were trying to slide in onto the bypass hose.
Also FWIW, the burning eyes odor is unburned hydrocarbons from incomplete combustion due to a LEAN condition.
The kickdown linkage is only going to come into play when the pedal is at WOT, to cause the (automatic) transmission to shift into 2nd gear --like when passing someone.
haven't messed with the truck in a few days but I did end up ordering the holley kick down extension. im also going to pick up a vacuum gauge so I can hook it up. what should the vacuum reading be? also I used an engine hoist to take the old intake off and install the 4bbl. those thing way a lot. don't think the gasket got moved while installation. How could I find out if the intake runners are leaking?
Also I forgot to mention the truck isn't running as good as I think it should. I think im gonna swap out the point for electronic ignition.
Wait a minute. You say it's not running as good as it was before the swap? Sounds like you have multiple problems. 1st things 1st. First you gotta get it running as it was. You prolly either have a vacuum leak or have the Dizzy vacuum advance hooked up to the wrong port on the Holley. Check to get it running as it was. You have to have a good running and adjusted engine 1st. Then you prolly bought a Holley that has a black secondary spring in it. Example is if you bought a Holley list number 80457. The black one is the strongest so your engine isn't opening the secondaries until RPM up pretty high. This is easy to overcome. Buy Holley part number 20-13 spring kit and part number 20-59 quick change kit to make things easier. I would try the plain colored spring 1st. Then keep trying lighter and lighter springs until you get the best results with no hesitation as you mash the go pedal. Here is the order of the springs in that kit:
black.....strongest.
brown
plain
purple
yellow
short yellow
white.............lightest.
