8mpg!!!

Hi all. I have owned a 2001 7.3l f250 for almost 2 years now and the fuel mileage stinks!!! It is a CC short box with an auto transmission and 33" tires. I have a garbage edge chip, AFE intake and a 4"exhaust. I always fill up with a 1/4 tank left, and it will usually take 75-80L. The problem is I drive like a granny and I can only get 3-340km mixed driving or 250km in the city. A friend has the identical truck with a 6spd manual and claims he can get 6-700 km. Any help will be greatly appreciated. (Except the smart *** "slow down" comments.) Sry for the novel.

Wow!!! I don't understand how if we have the same truck I get the same fuel mileage as when you tow 19000lb... On a flat ish hwy, empty in the summer at around 80kmph I can get 13mpg. What could be wrong with my rig?

You need to get the truck on a (proper) scanner and start with verifying that all sensors and systems are good, which doesn't sound likely.

Go get yourself some diesel clean additve in the gray bottle. It cleans and lubricates the injectors, fuel pumps and the likes. If its cold I.e 30 and below go with the white bottle. It may take a few tanks but it should help. Since owning my 7.3 with 136,000 I started at only 9.5 and I am up to 12mph only after three fill ups. The first two had the white bottle and the last one I put in the gray. Hope this helps.

Exhaust back pressure sensor/tube comes to mind right off the bat. Although, without a scan tool of some sort we are just guessing.

Agreed with the boy named Sous. A common issue that kills MPGs is a clogged exhaust back pressure tube and/or sensor. Here's a link to a good FTE thread on the subject, and here's Guzzle's how-to page.

Boost leaks come to mind also.

If you have been doing a lot of short stop and go city type drives, you will most likely yield that low of a number for mileage. I am currently out at school and have about a 2 mile drive to school and a mile and a quarter drive to work. Other than idling to warm up mine never runs for very long, sometimes as little as about 5 - 7 minutes between start up and shut down. My average mpg hand calculated is down in that 9 range. When I hit the road I am back at 16-19 depending on where I fill up and where I am driving.

However, like the other guys said, get something to use to check out everything on the truck, especially the EBP sensor.

An OBDII adapter and an app for a portable device (link in my signature) will be able to read the sensors in your truck, and depending on which software you get - you may be able to conduct some tests. One thing's for sure... your odometer is lying - at least a little. Those tires reflect less distance traveled than actual. If you have access to software that can link to the ABS system (like AutoEnginuity or FORScan), you can set the correct size for your tires.

Boost leaks, exhaust leaks, and EBP sensor are high on the suspect list - assuming you don't use the truck for a grocery getter in town in the winter.

Miles, not kilometers:

as the guys have said, a plugged EBP tube will cause poor mileage.
my 02 needs the tube cleaned and has dropped from 15 mph to around 10 mpg.
another thought. are you using the lie o meter for mileage, or hand calculating? because the lie o meter will be wrong with a chip or tuner.
and get rid of that edge and put a chip with custom tunes in the truck, you will be much happier with the way it runs.

All good advice so far!

Brakes are notorious for getting hung up- especially here in the "rust belt"

Jack up one axle at a time (engine off, jackstands and block the other wheels), and while in neutral spin the tires by hand. They should spin freely- not forever, but no real drag.

I was waiting for this to come up...

Spending money replacing something that he hasn't complained about IS NOT going to help his mileage complaint at all.

Thanks to everyone for the input! I did a very thorough clean of the ebpv tube and sensor less than a year ago, I also did all my brakes less than a year ago. Just recently I tightened all my turbo boots and didn't notice any soot of oil leaks there. I haven't checked for exhaust leaks yet. I guess I will take it to a stealership or a shop that can test all of my sensors. Not helping my cause is that city driving here is chock full of hills and lights. To work and back is all the city driving I do tho
