So the previous owner said there was a "bulletproofed" EGR cooler on the truck, it was installed before he bought it (I am 3rd owner). Neither of us are sure what that means (if he bought a supposedly "fail-proof" cooler or if he has had the cooler plated on the ends). I need to install a new oil cooler so here in next couple of weeks I will pull it off and make sure of what it is, but right now I don't know. The question is if I just unplug the EGR valve and turn it off on my programmer will it do engine damage if the EGR cooler is not blocked off?
If you have a functioning cooler in place leave EGR valve plugged in and on. If you have a delete, turn EGR off on the tuner but leave the valve plugged into the harness. It affects fan and vgt function
I just pulled a bulletproof egr cooler off a truck that failed. I've seen quite a few failed ones. Imo,, they're only bulletproof if the truck isn't driven. Lol
Its not "Bulletproofed" The company Bulletproof Diesel remans the egr coolers They cut out the old guts and weld in a newer design that is not supposed to have failures. Even comes with a lifetime guarantee.
If the ERG isn't deleted, it will still flow hot exhaust thru it and can rupture. Turning the sensor off won't hurt the sensor. Unplugging it will hurt fan operation.
Turning the EGR off and not being deleted, would probably raise the chance of rupture as the hot exhaust gas has no where to go. But honestly, no way to really tell without pulling the cooler off and looking or you can see the delete plate in place.
Ruptured EGR coolers a mess... the coolant gets into the cylinders, turns to steam and raises cylinder pressure and then stretches head bolts or causes head gasket failures.... you can turn if off if you'd like.... I wouldn't until its deleted or verified as deleted.
whats the hurry to turn if off, it won't improve performance.
Yeah I have got to get that thing off there, I am having a lot of pressure in combustion chamber so I think it's already ruptured, hoping it didn't mess up the studs or the head gaskets!!!! Will find out what's under there this weekend.....fingers crossed it's just the cooler
