So the previous owner said there was a "bulletproofed" EGR cooler on the truck, it was installed before he bought it (I am 3rd owner). Neither of us are sure what that means (if he bought a supposedly "fail-proof" cooler or if he has had the cooler plated on the ends). I need to install a new oil cooler so here in next couple of weeks I will pull it off and make sure of what it is, but right now I don't know. The question is if I just unplug the EGR valve and turn it off on my programmer will it do engine damage if the EGR cooler is not blocked off?
Here you go. If you look at the pictures of the stock vs "bulletproofed" you can see that the stock egr is just aluminum fins (like your radiator) and the upgrade has steel tubes. Also, you never mentioned why you wanted to unplug it? Is there a reason? It doesn't effect your oil cooler because the coolant is fed from the oil cooler to the EGR cooler.
Unplugging the EGR valve will effectively stop the function of the EGR system. If you turn it off on your tuner, you won't get the check engine light. It wont hurt anything, but it wont help anything either.
