There is a reason that vendors sell replacement stake pockets...there is a market for them because the originals rust out and need replacement. If someone has GOOD stake pockets, it is more than likely that they are attached to a rare bed that is in good condition as well...and there isn't much chance that they will cut off the stake pockets for you. Anyone who is so enamored with "patina" should do some homework on how to ruin new metal to make it look old. Bob's suggestion was tongue in cheek...go on the internet and search for "patina techniques" or other such search terms and you will find tons of info. I believe that I speak for most of the forum members here when I say that new metal is a thing of beauty and it should be treated as such...prepped, primed, painted, and made to look like the day it rolled off the show room floor.

Thanks for the briefs history lesson. Had the previous owner not cut the bottom 4 inches off my early style bed 1950 merc. Then I wouldn't need new shiny metal. But then again my truck is probably not all that special or rare or ???????? I can think of many trucks I have seen where the bed has no business being called a bed but had great pockets. YES even in the great white north.

Sorry for asking for such a dumb request your holyness

I think a bit more info up front would have prevented me from assuming you were unaware of the repop's, and from assuming the new repop's would solve it for you. Hope a good set of used ones turns up for you. Stu

If you decide to repalace the stake pockets with new ones, you can create your own patina by painting the pockets a similar color. Then sand the areas you want rusted and spray or brush vinegar on the bare metal.
You can spray or brush hydrogen peroxide on the areas you put the vinegar and the metal will rust almost before your very eyes. May take a few tries to get the patina you are looking for. Clear paint will stop the rusting process.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the HELPful advice guys. And even the banter. One more quick question.

Because the PO chopped the ends of mine off I'm lost as to the length. If I'm correct, they are identical to the front ones except for the chain mounts. True or false

Yes, front and rears should be the same.
I think the rears were more prone to rust out due to the way the bed was designed. If you do have to buy a pair you should probably step up and buy the rear bed piece that connects them as the lower piece and the pockets are pretty much what give the ear of the bed any structure.

I fabbed the lower piece myself. I cut one leg off some 2x3 rectangular tubing and then nestled a length of 2" round tubing in it and welded it all together. Here is a link to my old gallery;

Actually, that's not true. Painting over rust will not stop the oxidizing process. The rust will continue to eat at itself under paint until the paint bubbles and falls off. It may actually even accelerate the process.

Thanks
I can't remember, I'm pretty sure it was 1/8"
My wife bought me the stake pockets. At the time I was too cheap to by the lower bed part and the connecting pieces that go between the lower piece and the stake pockets.

Another thing that I did was to weld a piece of steel inside the bed pockets where the tailgate hinge goes. That way I could drill and tap some holes to mount the tailgate hinge.
