I am getting ready to mount the shifter for my brownie and I need to sit in the truck so I can figure out where it will work best. My seat is stripped down to the bare springs. About how much temporary padding should I have on the seat bottom and back to approximate my normal sitting position?
Thanks. Mark
Thanks! Skalywag I think that will work. If I use anything thicker on the back I don't think I could get my fat belly behind the steering wheel . These cabs are a lot smaller than they were 30 years ago!
I don't see seat foam for '48-'52 trucks listed in the Dennis Carpenter, LMC or Mac's catalogs.
Do most folks just go to the local ladies fabric store and buy foam in sheets and then cut & layer to fit?
Tom
I'm not an upholstry guy, but here is how we did Mater:
Foam comes in different densities so I went down to our local upholstry supply to check it out. I used a medium density; 2-1" layers on the bench and 1-1" layer on the back due to double springs. Both topped with 1/2" Dacron padding. I'm over 200 and wanted a firm feel. The foam will lay in with a firmer feel than at the store. More Dacron will add a more plush feel. There is allot of wheel clearance. @ 6-2 I am looking through the top of the windshield.

If you don't mind me asking, is you seat done with seat covers, or by an upholsterer. If covers where did you purchase them. They are nice.
Thanks for all the replies!
1950FordF1, That is nice looking upholstery in Mater. I too am interested in if you covered the seat yourself, where you bought the cover.
Thanks, Mark
I bought 2" foam from Jo Ann Fabrics, it is light green. I bought the cover on line from Raybuck, my wife and I installed it. Not an easy job but I've done harder jobs.
very nice. I'll be checking them out when I redo my seats... Did y'all do the open or closed back??
mike
I did the open back too, but ended up covering it with some vinyl fabric. I should have just paid the extra $15 and got a closed back in the first place for the '51. I'll be getting the seat cover for my '49 through Raybuck, same exact style except closed back. I'm sure I'll be happy with them again.
I still have to redo my seat, but after seeing Old Dan's seat cover in person, I will also be getting one from Raybuck. It's a really nice looking cover.
