Bench seat repair question

So the years of Oklahoma sun, heat, and grandpa *** have pretty much done my bench seat in. I don't think the seat frame itself has problems, but the vinyl is shot and the seat foam is showing some damage as well. In addition, the foam in the backrest is having problems too; there is a fine layer of orange dust on everything behind the seat, from the disintegrating foam.

I'm working with the good folks at SMS Auto Fabrics to get the proper pattern of vinyl for my seat. What I am wondering about is the foam itself...I see that places like LMC Truck and NPD have replacement seat cushions for $250+. I haven't seen replacement foam for the seat back. My question is, do I need to source replacement foam designed specifically for my truck? Or will any competent upholstery shop be able to provide foam that is comfortable and well-fitted to my truck?

I believe any truly professional upholstery shop can source the right foam.

One would think so, but it never hurts to check. Thanks.

Yep, Gary's right (as usual )

This is bread and butter stuff for any decent trimmer.
They can use a variety of foam compounds to customise the seat, create bolsters and support etc.

Depending on how much you want to spend, you could change it to bucket seat style at each end.

Good to know...but definitely not. I plan to keep it as close to the original, slick vinyl as possible; the kind that my high school physics teacher would approve of.

As he used to say while explaining centrifugal force - "Imagine you're on a date, in your car with a bench seat. If you really like your date, you make lots of right turns. If you don't like your date, you make lots of left turns. And if you really don't like her, you make sure her door is unlocked first."

that's a great way of learning. Love it!

If it's vinyl, it has to also be a dark colour, gotta ensure those 3rd degree burns on your *** and legs in summer
