Hammer welding

Does anyone on here still hammer weld? I used to but since I got my lazy **** wire feed I havent. I've got one front fender that's kind of a mess and also acquired a nice little torch and have decided it's time to go back to doing it right.

It's a lot easier with 2 guys, but I've never had the luxury of an extra set of hands.

It has been decades since I did that, but you know it kind of looks like something I might try on this old truck. The old gas welding has about become a lost art since the mig came on line.

Yeah, I haven't really ever liked the results from the mig. Even if you can get it ground smooth, forget hammer and dollying the weld because itis so hard. With the hammer welding, the weld is much more malleable. And you are controlling the shrinkage as you go. With the series of spot welds I do with the mig, I always end up with pin holes in the weld. With the torch you have a lot more control and can use the filler for a heat sink in thin areas.

I was taught to gas weld using baling wire or coat hanger, what do you like to use for rod? As I remember after you weld an inch or two and hammer it you apply a damp rag to it to control shrinkage. It has been so long I think thats what you do.

Yes, basically baling wire, coat hanger is too fat for body work. I buy the wire in 5 pound rolls, called tie wire like they use to tie rebar. Most hardware stores have it. The wet rag is not generally a part of the welding process but is good for certain shrinking.

Well, a rather humbling report. The little Smith torch I had hopes for....well not so much. I have always been a Victor man, not much else and now I another reason. The Smith is junk. I tried any of the tips in a size range that might work and every one of them has a fuzz ball flame, no nice clean inner flame. Just too hard to control. I'll have to dig out the old Victor junior and see what I have for tips and do some prcaticing

When I built my headers I used my Victor Junior. Neutral flame, low angle to surface of the metal, 5-6 lbs. pressure oxy and acetylene. I use 1/16" gas welding rod. It is a straight rod. That way it is easy to hold on to and not swinging around poking me in the face etc., like coiled mig wire or tie wire. 000 tip.
I had a pro weld the tubes to the flange so that the weld is not visible.
