Temperature spike

Let me start by saying I am not very mechanic savvy. I drive a 97 F150 5.4L v8 with about 230k miles. I'm having trouble with a temperature spike and coolant blowout. I have flushed my radiator twice (with just water) and replaced my thermostat but for some reason I keep having the same problems. My truck struggles to reach normal running temperature. It stays cold for an abnormal amount of time then the gauge climbs slightly then suddenly spike to overheating. If I let off the gas the temperature will regulate to normal running temperature but sometimes drops back to cold before doing so. When I check under the hood there is almost always a little blowout from the lid of the coolant tank. I'm at a loss. Everything I've read says it's the thermostat but the problem persists even with a new thermostat. Please help

Welcome to the forum!

It sounds like you either have a large air pocket in the cooling system or you have a head gasket issue. I would start by having the cooling system pressure tested to see if there is a leak in a head gasket or other issue.

Update

I haven't been able to go to a mechanic to check the pressure yet but my guess is that isn't it because when I open the cap in the morning after a night of not running there is stl pressure to be released. How would I go about bleeding air that might be in the system? Someone else supports that theory
