Hey guys. Turns of the engine I bought for my 90 F-150 is a 79' according too the casting numbers. My question is what do yall reccomend for a rebuild? Brand? Full rebuild? Just re-ring? And since this is a flat tappet engine can I use a mild cam in it or would that not be a good idea? I'm just gonna put a 600 Eddy on it? Any input technical or personal experience is greatly appreciated!
Full rebuild is best IMO then you know what you got. As stated elsewhere this vintage motor has low compression so a stock rebuild kit is not what you want, you could order a master gasket set and non specific parts like timing sets and cover, but bearings, pistons/rings, and cam you want to pick out individually after the machine shop tells you what size you need and also after you decide what heads other than the originals you plan to use. Again the heads on this smog era motor have massive combustion chambers so you should at the very least use late model E7TE heads and then pick a cam suitable to your requirements.
I'm going to use the heads from the 96 I have. I actually am a fabricator at a local machine shop but am just new too all of this since this is my first rebuild. Could you please specify the sizes of things I will b lookin at as far as the cam and stuff goes. I have all of the proper tools here for checkin specifics I just don't know what too chec . Hate too sound like a dummy I just wanna make sure I do this right and get optimal performance out of what I have cost wise short of bore and stroke and all of that. Thanks man.
Is that an engine machine shop or something else? A lot of engine specific tools are needed to work on a motor so if that's not your specialty I'd suggest you talk with someone in your shop that is or take it to specialty engine rebuilder.
A good book to have for a first time builder is this one...
