I was planning on getting a new engine installed in my 68 f100 360cid. I called one place near me... They gave me an estimate for 2,300 for a new engine and install. I was wondering If i should just get mine rebuilt. What are the price comparisons. I would get a shop to do it for me. What do they do exactly when they rebuild a engine like mine. How much would it run for a shop to rebuild my engine. My engine now has a 2bbl carb with headers and 190,000 miles on it. Please help me make a decision, im only 17 and i want to make the right choice. You guys are pretyy much my only source for info on what to do, cus i dont know if these shops are ripping me off.
Thanks.
Howdy, I'm familiar with older fords and gots a little advice. Pull the motor yourself. disassemble it. use the phone to get estimated pricing on having the heads completely redone(all new parts!) Do the same for getting the block bored and decked for flatness at head gasket surface. heads will have to be decked also. The first thing they will probably recomend is "hot tank cleaning", I would recomend this also. Do not throw away old parts untill you have the motor broken in. For the blocks guts, get a rebuild kit with everything in it; gaskets, pistons, crank, bearings etc.. This is the most economical and you can get a variety of specific use stuff tailored to your needs(better cam, rings etc). Try summit and performance automotive warehouse(paw) for parts kits first(they deal with antique stuff like you got). Last bit of adv. is to get experienced help when fitting the block and stuff together. Hope this helps
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 17-Jan-02 AT 09:15 AM (EST)]I'm assuming for $2,300 you're actually getting a remanufactured engine, if it is a new engine, then that looks like a great deal to me. Also, is the engine a short block, long block, or crate engine? I agree with DZK that your best bet is to pull the engine yourself and build it the way you want it...but, if I had a choice of rebuilding with a shop or installing a remanufactured engine, I would go with the remanufactured. I feel that you have a little better quality control with a company that rebuilds engines than with a mechanic who does not get an everyday opportunity to rebuild. The reman engine will come with a good warranty, you can be assured that it has been appropriately cleaned, magnufluxed to check for cracks, and meets the appropriate tolerances. The local mechanci typically has to send out for this type of machine work...
