"carbon build up" would be in the combustion chambers or in the exhaust ports. Sometimes if the intake valve is leaking it can back up into the intake ports but by just removing a valve cover you can't see any of that, so I don't get your question ?

could it be a leaky valve cover gasket leaking oil into the spark plug recess causing a short? when a plug is shorting like that it sounds like a ticking and with the loss of that plug (or more) it would cause issues.
