I have a 400 amp variable carbon pile load tester with meters for amps and volts. I can kill most gasers when full load is applied. to see what your alt can charge you check your engine off volts, then fire engine and apply load until the engine off voltage is reached. you can connect in in line with your starter and see the amps your starter pulls from batts when turning the engine. a great tool.

Have you ever checked what your IDI pulls when cranking?

fresh rebuilt starter around 200-250 amps, depending on how cold it is outside..
dead starter 500+ amps

If you can get an employee that isnt lazy and knows how to use the "amp clamp" on the tester they can tell you current draw on your starter. Of course this will be on a warm engine since you got to drive to the parts store.

i do my own tests. i would not trust a parts store counter monkey with anything.
except for a few of the old timers at my NAPA store.
they are one of the few stores in the area that have retired mechanics behind the counter.
