Driveline yoke greasing

So last time I did this I installed a zerk, it has been a couple years and the clunk is coming back. So since the Ford teflon grease does not come in a grease gun cartridge I am planning on squeezing the tube of Ford grease into an empty/cleaned 3oz cartridge from a mini grease gun and using that. Unless anyone has a better idea. I have always used the Ford blue teflon and would prefer to keep it that eway.

Sounds to me like you've already got it figured out.

FWIW, Something more permanent with better results that you could do is have a driveline shop replace the slip yoke with a properly fitting one and solve it long term. I did this last year when I took my driveshaft in for the center bearing replacement and the shop convinced me into doing it and I'm thrilled with the results.

Actually my driveline shop did recommend that a couple of years ago, and I am considering it. I can't remember how much they quoted at the time.

I think it's worth the cost if you can swing it. Every take off, shift up or down is better. The grease while inexpensive, just dampens the play between the splines.

So is this a factory defect in the spline fitment or just normal wear & tear with a truck this age?

What I was told was that Ford used a sloppy fit so it's an issue out of the box that probably gets worse with mileage. The tightness of new slip joint compared with the old one in hand was significant.

First time I've ever heard of this.

When I pulled my slip yoke apart a couple months ago for center bearing replacement, I still have 100% of the blue plastic lining on every spline of my joint, and that's after about 280K miles. I wiped on a thin film of HD moly grease and will simply keep truckin' with what I have.

The only play I can detect at all in my truck's driveline is just a slight bit of rotational movement at the tranny and a very very slight bit at the rear end. No rotational movement at the slip yoke, and no vertical movement in any position. I also have completely new uj's in all three positions as well as the new center bearing.

First I've heard of this also (also still have all of my blue lining at 285K). I've been greasing mine about once a year since I bought the truck and finally broke down and got the Ford XG-8 grease and used it a couple of months ago. Hopefully that extends the time before the clunk starts again. I've already got plenty of things to schmooze my wife for before I try to sell her on "fixing" a working driveline. Although I am curious on what gets done for this...

I tried many greases and even added moly-sulfide powder to moly grease, and nothing worked as well as the Ford grease. I ordered the 3 oz. tube and they sent me the 1 lb. tub, so I'm going to help a buddy lube his spline with this extra grease. Mine had all the blue plastic lining on the splines. Every Ford truck I have owned ('76, '90, '99, '01) has had driveshaft spline slop or stick/slip issues. I agree that the real solution is likely to replace the spline.

Well, I guess I'm just one of the lucky ones on the tighter end of fit variance. I've only had the clunk once and that was this past summer right before I greased it (roughly 275K mile mark).

I'm jealous! I'm on the other end of the spectrum and seem to be doing it about every 8 months (12K miles or so). If the Ford grease keeps things happier under there and I'm only pulling the slip yoke apart once a year (or less) I'll be happy.

I'm on 2 years with no clunk using brake grease with PTFE...my Ford dealer was closed so I just picked it up at one of the chain part stores. So far so good and its a lot cheaper...jury is still out on weather its a suitable sub as I never had the clunk for 13 years with the lube that came with the truck.

Which part is the spline part. I was looking under mine today and see the center bearing and a black rubberish looking cover over something.. Is that the york with splines you need to replace?? was looking on rockauto and did not see a yoke part..

I am guessing the spline are under the rubber boot thing, and the part to the right behind the center bearing is the yoke part..
