When I did mine, I just got the spray can of the stuff. The specific directions should be on it (drying time, application, etc).
But if I remember right, I put a light coat on one side, let it dry, flipped it over, and then sprayed the other side and let it dry. Afterward, I installed the headgasket like normal. You want a smooth, even coating that fully covers it, but doesn't have drips, runs, etc.
