mach stereo problems

I have a 1998 Expedition, Eddie Bauer, with the mach stereo system (cassette in the dash and six disc changer in the arm rest).

1. When I try to play cds, the system advances through every cd in the changer, then I get a "no disc" message and the radio comes back on.

2. I got another CD changer form ebay, same model number and everything. After installing it, it played fine. I drove to a friends house and shut the Expy down. when I got in it again, the CD changer stopped playing. It did the same as the old one.

Can someone PLEASE help. How can this other unit go bad just like the other one...

Thanks for your input.

306,

My guess would be, the head unit connection.
To determine if the cable/connector is bad,
expose both ends of the CD cable and jiggle
the cable and see if the head unit fails to see the
CD unit. If not, then the head unit may be bad.
You have already replaced the CD unit, right?
Also remove the power to the CD unit like it was
new and see if it reacts the same.
Good luck ,
KING SWING.

It's kinda hard to tell, but I'd say you may have gotten a bad changer. If the rest of the head unit works fine, (tape deck, and radio), and you put in a new changer and it worked, but quit, I'd start with the changer again.

I had the same problem on my 99 I bought used a few months ago. The dealer agreed to fix it . Three different techs looked at it and could not fix it so it was taken out and shipped to the local company that repairs them for the dealership. They tested and could find nothing wrong. When the dealer reinstalled it worked fine. No one could tell me what caused the problem but all were puzzled by how it started working again. Sorry I could not be more help.

I have a similar problem. My changer works sometimes and I get the "no dj" other times. My cassette doesn't work and the left front speaker is about 70% most of the time but comes in 100%. I can hear a slight intermitant buzz in it when it's at 70%. My guess is a loose wire in the head unit. I haven't checked into a new one yet or getting it fixed. I have just kinda lived with it. I am not too impressed with the mach system. Wasn't it about a $1000 option when new? I bought my 98 used. I know this didn't help, but I thought I'd let you know your not alone

Well, thanks everyone for your help, but I give up. I really dont like not being able to listen to my CD's, so the Stock CRAP is coming out and I am getting an aftermarket head unit with CD.

Thanks again for everyones Help.

Edgar306, have you checked into an aftermarket unit? I was thinking of doing so, but wondered if the amp and sub-woofer would still work?

The way I see it, if they dont work, I will end up just upgrading those too... I will report back once I install the new head unit.
