I inherited Dad's 1967 F100 4X4, 352/4 spd, Dana 21 "in and out" T case, long bed. The truck is double fugly, but it's all paint problems, very little body damage, and the ol' girl is still solid, except......the oldest son installed a very, very tired 390 in it several years back, and somewhere along the way, the shifter and top plate of the transmission disappeared. Never was in love with the xfer case.
On a retirement income now, that doesn't allow for a lot of extravagances, so, I've acquired a few parts and pieces, and I'm looking for input.
I acquired a 1985 351/5.8 HO with C6 transmission out of an E250 van, runs like a scalded ape. No smoke, clean plugs. So far as I know, the transmission was original to the engine, and the package has somewhere in the vicinity of 120K miles. I also have had, for a LONG time now, a NP 205, divorce mount, out of a 78 F350 4X4. The E250 was, of course, rear wheel drive only.
I can source engine mounts for the 351, and adapt a mount for the C6 and source a Lokar shifter for the tranny. I have the crossmember still on the NP 205, and it looks like it should be adaptable to the F100 frame. There's a "Driveline Service" shop about 60 miles away, and, I worked there in 1979-80...maybe they remember me, BUT, they did great work, and can fab up shafts with flange/length dimensions.
Other than those changes, which I MIGHT get finished before they plant my carcass, the truck desperately needs power steering! Wasn't a problem when I was 17, bucked hay, moved irrigation pipe, milked and fed cows twice a day, and my arms looked like Popeye, but a bit tough today at 62 and both shoulders damaged and needin' repair......
So whaddayathink, is this a viable plan? Suggestions?
Sounds like you got it about figured! Power steering shouldn't be hard at all really, since you're 85 engine is already going to have the pump and stuff. Just need to get a power steering box for the truck and make the lines.
