I have a 1964 f250 4x4 it's sitting on 44"x18.5" Gumbo Monster Mudders. The problem I have is the worn out manual steering box.
I just purchased the truck recently and have been searching for any
info or companies that specialize in reproduction and restoration parts. I have had many older car restoration projects and there were always numerous companies that supplied parts. I'm not finding this to be the case with this project. I have searched {magazines, web sites, and salvage yards}, and have only came up with a couple of leads. I need to know what I need to convert to power steering. With the exception of the enormous tires I'm trying to keep the truck as original as possible, and the last thing in the world I would want to do is hack up the frame to get power steering. I,m not sure if this was an option for 64. The truck came with some extra parts, a power assist cylinder, pwr steering pump, and lines. I am some what familiar with fords power assist. I had a similar set up on my 67 mustang, but the truck does not have the power assist gear box or the mounting hole for the power assist cylinder on the drag link. I don't know of the parts I have were ever used on a 64 f250 or if they are off somthing else. Either way I need figure out weather I can use what I have or if it would be easier to update to something different. I'm trying to stay away from worn out salvage yard parts. I would like to find a reman or reproduction unit, but have not been able to locate anything. I was told that a late 70s f250 runs a similar gear box, but I'm not sure how reliable my source is.
I would not mind running a newer style gear box, as long as I don't have to modify to the extent that the original equipment won't go back on. I also have a broken outer axle on my front diff. I was told that it's dana 40, I'm sure that this is the original axle in the truck, but I'm not sure if the dana 40 was avalable in 64. If it is a dana 40 were can I find parts. I'm sorry to have gone on for so long, but I'm kinda new at this truck thing and have million questions. Any answers you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Also any info or places I can find more info would be great, thanks.
I have heard that you can use a Toyota power steering gear box for your truck. I don't know how true it is but it is nice to knw if it is. The Dana 40 front axle is easy to get parts for. You will end up having to go to a off road shop to order the parts you need or check out the transmission and diff. forum and post some questions there. Just to give you the right advice. I hope this helps.
Gearhead, im having the same problems with my 64 F-250 4x4 i bought , finding conversions.. Im going to try to fit a dana 60 with disc brake set-up under mine , then work on the power steering.. E-Mail me maybe we can work some of these problems out together .. Ive got some thoughts , just dont know if they will work or not .. I dont want to look to stupid asking a bunch of ??? so im going to trail and ear some of this stuff ... John
Here's something I was looking at for my '63(its an F-100 4x4)before I got sidelined.Look at some mid 70's F-600's or there abouts. There's a striking simularity in the way our old 4x's are built to the newer heavier models. The steering box looks like a bolt in(its in the same location/looks to mount the same).Only drawback I can see is it will drive(steer) like a bigger truck(crank that wheel!),maybe not.Hopefully,I can get back to workin on mine agin this year.Al ps-old school buses and U-hauls are good places to start looking.Good luck
I have a 1966 F-250. I want to convert to power steering and power brakes. Can someone please help point me in the right direction? I'm on a budget. Someone told me a while back that if I bought a newer truck I could use the parts. I just can't remember what years will fit.
DAV, Welcome to FTE The nations #1 site for Ford truck tech support.
Purchasing a 73-79 donor and harvesting the parts is a #1 choice. Read this sites Atricles/Specs linked fron the very top banner. Hopefully you will find what you need.
Look carefully, and don't buy the first one that you see. Look for one with the engine/tranny combo that you have or want to go to. Check the front wheels for King pin wear. No need to beat the heck out of them if you don't need to. IMHO
I fabbed in an 83 bronco steering box then installed a 78 dana 60 front with crossover steering. It steers awsome. I did have to notch the frame a bit then reinforce it with a plate on the outside. Gearhead165, are you sure your axle isnt a dana 44? I have a 66 f-250 4x4 parts truck with the axles still in it, Ill never use them. The are too weak for the big tires. A disc brake front axle is the way to go. Im curious on your suspension, is it 64 style lift springs or did someone fab something else different in? Are you still running the 292? Id like to see some pics if at all possible. Id like to be able to run 44s on mine but I think Im going to run chevy suspension.
