There are lots of opinions on this. I have the 6.7 and love it. Some have the 6.0 and love that. Others have the 7.3 and love that. They all have there drawbacks and pluses. It all depends on what you will use the truck for. I don't buy used anymore because I am OCD on my vehicles and maybe the last guy just drove the wheels off and its do some major work. I would stay away from a modified truck. Especially one with a tune or lifted.
If you don't know much about diesels then I would go with a 7.3. They are the cheapest and easiest to maintain and repair, the most forgiving if not maintained properly, the most reliable and have plenty of power for whatever you want to use it for.
I am looking at going and buying either an F-250 or an F-350 truck. Kinda wondering (diesel engines are foriegn to me) what is the best size of powerstroke (liter wise) out there. I know Fords always change a thing here or there and seem to change the engine even if it is just fine.
How much are you willing to spend?
Your budget will dictate what years are available to you. From there you can get suggestions. Right now it's too wide of a question to get a good answers.

Dyed diesel is just that: dyed. There's no difference between that and regular diesel other than the dye to show that it's un-taxed. All diesel engines can run it.
The only difference you may see is if it's not ULSD diesel. However that's pretty much almost gone now.
Just don't get caught running dyed diesel when you aren't supposed to or don't have the proper documentation. You can run into huge fines.
