Simple question

Will the bell housing for my 300inline 3 speed out of my 78 fit on a 300 from 96?

Found one on Craigslist. That's the only thing I know in my limited knowledge that might be a problem. Anything else I should know? The efi stuff will come off.

Thanks as always.

Are you trying to swap the 96 engine into your 78 or just wanting to mount the 78 bell & transmission on the 96 engine?

The bellhousing bolt pattern didn't change. So yes the 78 bell housing will bolt up. Just make sure to swap over the block plate, flywheel, clutch and starter from the 78.

If you are swapping the 96 engine into the 78 there are a couple things. I don't know if the 96 will have the boss on the block for the clutch linkage pivot ball. And the 96 doesn't have the opening in the block for the mechanical fuel pump. So you either need to run an electric fuel pump or open up the fuel pump mounting boss. And there may be some other minor differences.

I knew that, I just wasn't sure if Ford bothered to delete the pivot ball boss off the block on a 96. Because they didn't bother removing the mechanical fuel pump mounting boss when they went to EFI.

I don't believe the engine in my '84 (first year for hydraulic) had the boss for the pivot ball.

My 85 Bronco and 86 F150 both had the pivot ball boss ( part of the bellhousing ear on the block ) . And so did my 91 and older efi blocks. I just haven't owned any newer then 91 so I wasn't sure if they changed on the later efi blocks.

All the EFI engines I used had that Pivot Ball Mounting Boss and was even threaded.

Made my '96 engine application (as per engine rebuilder) install easy peasy into my '78.

edit: Use the Flywheel and clutch that came with your transmission. I had trouble when I tried the zf clutch hitting the np435 bellhousing, guess it was a larger diameter.
