Head gaskets

Hello,

I have a 2005 excursion 4x4 v10.
193000 mi.

The degas tank was puking coolant. And smelled like exhuast.
New therm and w/p.
Did a compression test . Everything in the 160 to 180 range,

So I decided to just do the head gaskets. Have not pulled heads yet. But pretty close.

Should I do anything else while this deep. Am I on the right track? And finally is there a link on how to reset the timing after putting heads back on.

I am a little worried as I do not see very many posts on headgasket replacements of These engines

I am just beyond this point. Valve covers off and exhuast manifolds off

So you have good compression? I asked for the numbers in your other thread. It could just be a intake manifold gasket leak, I am 98% positive that there is a water jacket that goes through the intake manifold. Could be getting water in that way? Have you done a leakdown test?

If you have good compression I wouldn't go pulling heads off of it just yet IMO...

Clogged heater core or some blockage in the front/rear heat(if your truck has rear A/C)?

Also should have mentioned this in another thread but a pressure test of the cooling system might have been a good idea before it was torn apart, hindsight is always 20/20...

I don't know how you could have those #'s & have a bad head gasket as well.

Well my rear heat has been blowing cold for a while. I always thought it was a blend door and would get to it later. But I don't understand how that or a intake gasket can make the tank puke and smell like exhaust.

I hope it's not a head gasket. That's 300 I cold put toward springs.

I did not do a leak down. I will not go any further until I do if that test is that important. I will research if I can still do it with the intake off . I hope so.

I don't know, but it "sort of" doesn't look like the walls of the gasket were breached?

Is that a crack or a piece of carbon on the 3rd photo down from the top? On the left cylinder?

In the first pic, looks like a possible crack between the valves of that forward cylinder.

I haven't pulled a non race fuel head in years but I think that white crap is the result of the "clean burning" fuel additives used nowadays.
