Hot rod pickup

Ok, I asked this in the 57-60 section but it seems either no one there knows their trucks or they don't like new people.

I am building a 57 IH and will be using a y block. I'm wanting about 300rwhp and a gvwr of 5400#.
What is the best trans I could use? I think a 4speed would be best but a 5speed is cool too. Budget is a concern so a new tko or t56 is unrealistic. A Muncie is tempting but I'm not sure if the weight cap would be an issue as I couldn't find any info on that, just hp/tq ratings which is pushing my aimed power already.

Transmission options for the Y-block are somewhat limited without getting into using expensive adapter bellhousings and such. Muncies are not the strongest of transmissions. A Ford top loader car trans would be a better choice if that's the angle you're headed, and possibly easier to find stock parts to make work for less money. But with the prices of either of those trans being in the stratosphere these days, you could spend about the same coin on a TKO and have a more user friendly hot rod. There are a lot of options. you'll need to decide what best fits your intended use of the truck, and budget. Good luck with your project.

A Y block in a cornbinder...
...sounds like and interesting project.

I don't have an answer for you but like anything else in this crazy hobby it comes down to a compromise between whats available and whats available.

Good luck
Bobby

Thanks guys, ford top loaders are actually an earlier gen of t10 then the Muncie. And the super t10 was the newest but truthfully not any better then a Muncie.
Weight rating is a major concern since I wanna use my pickup like a pickup. Bell housing wouldn't be an issue as I'm willing to build what ever is needed.

I enjoy reading the yblocksforever site. A lot of great info and I got some ideas on how to build my engine from it. But sadly I didn't find anything on a good trans

I went with a t-56 in mine because you can find the used so you don't have to spend the close $3000 that it costs to buy a new one. I got mine for $900

You seem to be leaning towards a manual trans. If so fitting your Y Block into a IH you could mount it with car mounts. That would allow more options than the eared truck bell housings. Aftermarket Adapters will allow you to install almost any automatic tranny.

Autos are out of the question. As much work as it'd take to convert from manual to auto, I'd be very disappointed in it.

I'm not sure where to find a used t56 except in a camaro. The shift tower needs to be moved forward if I use one of them. Something to look more into.

A custom bell is acceptable as I'd build it myself and I'd prefer the front/rear engine mounts to the mid mounts also. Though I'm not stuck on that one.
