Just got the truck a month ago and since the first day I got it it's had this tick vehind it. It's all times regardless of rpms. Manifold tick? Or valve train? It's going into the shop next week for a full exhaust so I'll have the gaskets checked, it is just an obnoxious noise to listen to from such a nice truck.
Sometimes I remember ,sometimes I jump to conclusions .I had an old f150 with a straight six that started ticking real bad so i figured rockers might need adjusted tore everything down just to find out I was about 4 quarts low on oil

Didn't hurt the motor
filled it back up and it ran great and didn't tick at all ,the 300 is probably the toughest motor ever made
My Dad had a 1971 F100 with the straight 6. Dang thing would shake any carb you installed on it to death. I miss that old truck.

Back to the Tick Issue that is the best method ever is the piece of hose or plastic pipe to your ear and go listening.
Most likely a cracked or warped manifold. Our 351 has had a tick for years. Went away for while after changing the manifolds, but it eventually started to tick again.
I changed the manifolds on my 91 f150 with a 302 for long tube headers, when I took the stock manifolds off both sides were cracked in half.couldn't even see a crack in them while they were on
mines a 1991 f150 4x4 302 auto
The only thing I did was removed stock manifolds bolted headers on and tied the plug for the o2 sensor up
The only thing I've done with the smog system is put a block off plated where the egr meets the tb.
the truck has 35's and 4.56 gears and I get around 20mpg

Our 89 F250 351 has the same tick I have traced it to the manifolds also. I just haven't fixed it because it is just a ranch/work truck so it doesn't ever go more then 10 miles a month now. If it was one of our 5 regular driven (or soon to be regular driven) it would have had headers on it by now (except my 92 300 and brother's 91 300).
