Door Glass Felt Installation Problems

Hi everyone i was wondering if there is a trick to installing the glass channel felt in the door. i have tried getting it in my truck half a dozen times now and it doesn't stay in the channel. I know i could use adhesive but no one in any videos or any threads on the site have used it. Thanks

1. Make sure what you are using it what you are suppose to. Universal stuff is not going to work as well.

Are we talking about the division bar felt not staying any where?

2. Clean out all the old stuff.
3. Wipe down the track.
4. Remove the bolt that holds the fwd window track in in place. FYI it is below the regulator.

Get it started, tight to the top, squeeze outer edge together and work it in the groove. A light coat of weather stripping adhesive is ok. Half way down, get the bottom of the felt started in the grove and work it down past front of glass, sort of rolling window up and down a little while pulling on the botton of the felt will help. So will having that fwd bolt out.

Different steps for the inner and outer anti rattle strips or AKA cat whiskers.

77&79F250 thank you for the information. I should have been more specific. I am working on the divider felt on the top and back side of the window. Besides new paint being in the channel (not built up or runs) it is perfectly clean. I even ran a scotch brite pad through it and double checked everything with some picks and no luck. Any other ideas?

Ok got it now, who did you get your weather stripping from? That might be the issue? I used Jeffs Bronco Graveyard weather stripping and it went right in and stayed perfectly.

Did you put it in, in a cold or cool place or a warm shop? Maybe the catch edge on the weather stripping is not warmed up and flexible?

That is what i am thinking. I got the weatherstripping from the guy i bought the truck from and i have no clue where he got it. I do have the truck in a shop that is at 55 degrees so i don't think it would be a problem. I'll order the stuff from JBG and see how it goes. Thanks again. Alex

I experienced similar problems that you describe. I ended up using 3 m weatherstrip adhesive ... This held everything in place until I got the glass in place and rolled up the window tightly... After a short time the channel formed into its place and is formed correctly. Without the adhesive it kept falling out..

Seems like I started mine in the upper corner next to the window vent. Look at the felt and there should be a series of kerfs cut where it makes a 90 turn and starts down the back of the window. Those kerfs make it easier to go around that corner. From there I just list mine down the track. I used some locking pliers to help pull it down once I couldn't push it anymore. I also would raise and lower the glass to help move it down. Mine has been in for several months and fits snug. Overall it has helped quiet the noise and keep water out.

I just replaced the same window channels in my 79 F100. It took a bit of doing but:
1) I sprayed the channel and the back of the rubber/felt with a light coating of WD40.
2) Wound the window down
3) Then I pushed the felt down the channel as much as I could
4) reached in through the door and pulled the felt down with a pair of pliers, with each pull I wound the window up and down slightly which aided in the "pull" down
5) When the felt reached the bottom of the channel, I then wound the window up pushes the felt into place ahead of the window
6) Then I tweaked it to fit puling either up or down.
In the end I had excess at the bottom of the channel which I cut off. Winding the window up and down helps it seat. I never used any adhesive.

Hope this helps
