okay folks, got my WTS fixed so now it's time to figure out the next problem. The truck is cranking normally but won't run, its not producing any smoke while cranking. I disconnected the GPR system and tried to get it to run with fluid and it didn't even attempt to fire. I reconnected the GPR and tried to start it normally and nothing.so where should I be looking to correct this problem IDM ?
When the truck was running,it didn't smoke, had plenty of power and wasn't burning oil.
What are the steps and tools required by to compression testing a powerstroke?
Pop the vc's off. Pull the glow plugs out. And away you go. You will Need a compression tester for a diesel (500psi will do) and the adapter to fit the 7.3. It's a tough one because the rock arm gets in the way of the universal adapters. Some guys have made an adapter out of an old glow plug though.
I am about to pull the VC's. I have a diesel compression tester and I have an adapter that looks like a glow plug from a 7.3 IDI motor. Is this the adapter your talking about? I was wondering if it could be an IDM issue? I have a 95 model truck and I have a replacement IDM from a 97.Are they the same IDM? Something else came to mind.I know it's possible on a gas engine to "wash" the cylinders out using starting fluid I have had to wet test cylinders before to restore compression. A ny thoughts ? I let someone borrow this truck for six months, I got it back in this condition and I know they used a ton of starting fluid on it,empty cans in the bed of the truck
The adapter for the idi hits the rocker arms.
You can try the idm but like I said if it won't fire on starting fluid I think you have compression problems
I let someone borrow this truck for six months, I got it back in this condition and I know they used a ton of starting fluid on it,empty cans in the bed of the truck
I think I just figured out your problem
I agree with Mike. Starting fluid will ignight at a pretty low compression too so if it won't fire off that everything else could be perfect and it still won't go. That being said it only takes a few minutes to swap idms to see
I swapped out the IDM and still nothing. As everyone has said the adapter I have for my compression tester is to short.anyone know how to make one out of an old glow plug? For S&G I removed one GP at a time and spun the motor and heard compression.no way to judge how much or if it's enough to fire the motor.
