Rubber

I've been following the thread about door weatherstripping and have a question along the same line. Are any of the windshield gaskets better than the others? Do any of the various brands that vary in price fit better or are easier to install? Thank you in advance for your replies. This is for my 48 F1.

Hey 5.0,

I used the Dennis Carpenter seal purchased at NPD. It fit like a glove.

If you do a search on windshield install there is some good info and write ups on this site. Some of the guys are using a non hardening caulk when they do this. I went a slightly different way to avoid all the mess. Take a look at this video:

I found it very helpful. I used the 3M strip caulk on my install in the same manner. I did not use it for the back glass as there isn't as big a lip on the rubber and the strip caulk would have interfered. But on the windshield it worked great.

Listen to the part about keeping this stuff in the refrigerator. It is VERY sticky stuff. But that is what makes it so effective.

One more thing, and I can't stress this enough. If you do ANY painting in your shop do not use silicone spray of any kind as they do in the video. It is the fastest way to ruin new paint. I used a spray bottle of dish soap/water mixture and it worked great.

For what it is worth I was dreading installing the glass because of all the posts out there talking about how hard it is and how many times the glass gets broken. Maybe I just got lucky and my glass was cut to the perfect size but I had mine popped in under ten minutes.

Good luck and be patient,
Rich

I had to replace all the glass, except the rear light, in my 48. I bought the rubber, for all of it, at NPD. Everything fit fine and seals well.

Thanks for the replies folks! I've installed glass before, so no problems there. I was concerned that some of the less expensive seals might be tougher to work with. Years ago I put new glass in my 65 mustang , 76 Bronco and others and used the 3M black windshield sealer with good results. Clean up was no problem with 3M's adhesive remover. And no, I don't work for 3M! LOL.

Moe,

I just put it in the fridge. Much less sticky but still pliable enough to work it around the corners and press the pieces together. It may still stay pliable in the freezer but I've never tried so I can't say for sure.

Hey 5.0

Been on Scott, Oakland, Loon, Williams, Maceday and a few others in Oakland County. Never made it out to Walled lake.

Are you originally from Michigan?
