Windshield Fit - is it me?

The glass pros cant get my windshield to fit (what?!).
The seal doesnt quite lip over, it's a DC seal.
They think the glass is a smidge too big.
Anyone been here before, or is it just me?

I have had issues with our local glass cutters. I have had about 3 windshields put in my 49 Ford car and each one has a problem somewhere. Corners not cut right and leaks.
It seems its a dying art.
The old guy at one of our oldest shops doing flat glass work for old cars was really good. He has passed the work on to his nephew and his friend. They screw up more than they fix.
Friend of mine took his 56 ford in for window wings and they crimped the stainless to make the fit tighter!
He was hot. The old man had to settle it by him supplying another set of stainless and doing it free.

On the issue of windshields the flat glass type. Has anyone considered laying some of the blame on the repro rubber?
Along with that the flat glass if taken a close look at the exterior part of the windshield, you will se that the rubber sits ahead of the glass.
Thus the water when running off the glass goes directly down to the rubber, and eventually will leak into the cab.
Try a little clear silicone between the rubber and the glass, this will usually fix the problem. It worked for me, and I have had quite a few windshields put in, due to installing the tinted glass and just plain replacement.
I have all my glass cut by a friend who has been in the business for many years, and also works with the old iron.
Still the silicone treatment applies, and works. That is of course the person doing the glass work has the know how.
The silicone should also be placed around the top of the rubber, in fact it wouldn't hurt to put it all around.
Still though the repro rubber isn't as good as the O.E.M.

Hi

Are they installing the seal correctly and from the outside?

This is one of those "you get what you pay for" deals. Anything rubber is likely to come from Indonesian countries, because they grow the rubber and have a lot of rubber molding industries. I bought Dennis C.'s and it fit absolutely perfectly, no leaks even without any sealants. I bought from C&G for the rear glass and it was Indonesian, but fit quite accurately.

I'm sure the glass, if a cut-to-order one-off is a potential problem. I still have NOS glass.

The windshield and back glass in my 48 were broken but there were enough large pieces to use for a pattern by the local glass shop to cut them. The rubber I used came from LMC and it fit very well.

I agree on the rubber issue. I have a 62 falcon and a 63 ranchero. On one I went cheap and got a made in china windshield rubber. It fit but has a pucker at one corner I clear siliconed it and tried to massage it out but it still puckered. The other made in the US went in just fine.

Define "correctly" ?
On the back window (small 56) the big part goes on the inside, on the front I assume it goes on the outside?

I did, and have subsequently ordered a second seal from a second source for the second piece of glass. Backing that up, the first seal doesnt work on the windshield I took out! it just doent completely 'lip' over at the top.

Not sure if when I did the under 'eyebrow' repair I may have screwed something up?

Gotta say I thought putting the 56 cab on an Explorer frame would be the hard part!
