Emergency Brake cables

I have spent the day dismantling and freeing up the emergency brake hardware on this old girl. I am going to try to free up the existing brake cables tomorrow. Have any of you had any luck doing this?

Taped a steel funnel with marvel mystery oil in it. Heated the cable jacket with mapp gas. Loosenten up nicely and truck had sat since 1966. When I lived in New England folks would say they slide like buttah......

If the cables you have are like mine were, it was easier to replace. One was frozen and they were both very rusty. I thought it would be better to be safe, just in case one broke when I needed them. If you have the rubber coated ones, heating them will not be a nice thing.

GB, I have both a torch and a heat gun, do you think the heat gun could get it hot enough or do you have to get it red hot?

Mine were the spiral wrapped steel outer jackets. Both cable and jacket looked galvanized because they were gray in color. Just got them good and warm over and over again/ I removed them and soaked them and bent them around a lot. Then put them in the vice so I could tug on them with a lever vice gripped onto the fitting.. Once they gave a little they got better quickly. I am a FIRM believer in parking brakes for the good reason that we have a single master cylinder system. If your cables look frayed or suspect, replace them. I got lucky as mine were in good shape, just stuck. And don't heat them to red....

I was thinking just coil them up in a tub and immerse in diesel for a while.

GB That is the same cable I have and I was thinking along the same lines of using a vice and vice grips, did you apply the MMO before or after they came loose? I too want a good E brake, that is the main reason I want to save the stock cables if I can, they look to be in good shape, just stuck. When I go back together with it I want to use anti seize on every part. Every pin and clevis was rusted tight on this outfit today.

Just keep using it from time to time and it won't ever seize up!

Hi Chris, how are you doing? Have you been doing anything on your fine trucks since I saw you last? Would you believe that last week has been my first chance to work on mine. Sure wish we were closer, we could surely cripple ourselves working on this stuff. If you are ever in the city come see me.
