I went to the store the other day .I come out of the store ,backing up , turned the steering and hear a loud clunk.
Now I have a oval track race truck. It seems like something piled up in the steering box .
It cost me 40 bucks to get it towed home.
I am picking up a box off a 52 or a 53 not sure but it looks like it will fit I just have to take off the colum shift.
but how do you take off the steering wheel, I don't want to use a bf hammer.
how does it come off?
any ideas?
Remove the horn button and horn cup - save all the pieces and record how they go together. Use a puller - I usually make do with my harmonic balancer puller. If you don't have a couple of threaded holes inside the wheel, you may need to drill and thread a pair of them. Not all 48's had them from the factory - mine did.
Just to add to what Tim said, make sure you look carefully for those threaded holes in the steel steering wheel hub. I almost gave up and started to drill when I noticed a little discoloration and found out mine were absolutely packed full of stuff that was rock hard. Took me an hour to get 'em really cleaned out and run a bottoming tap in each one.
