Trans cooler

Hello all. I have a 2011 Navigator and want to install a trans cooler. Unfortunately I didnt get one from the factory. Does anyone know how to determine which is the inflow from the outflow line going to the radiator. I have heard put car in drive with foot on brake and inflow to radiator will be the warmer of the two? What about specific brands and sizes of coolers. Any suggestions? I have heard that you can not over cool transmission oil. Please give me some advice on this. Thanks in advance. By the way only towing a small travel trailer about 3500 pounds.

There is a transmission cooler in the radiator. It might be all that you need to cool your trans for a 3500 pound trailer.

I don't have a specific recommendation for an auxiliary cooler. There are two styles, a fin and tube and a stacked plate. The fin and tube is usually much cheaper, and you should avoid them at all costs. They are inefficient and restrictive.

You Navigator has a 6R80 transmission. It has an internal thermostat, so it's true that you can't overcool this trans.

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking of the stacked plate type. Would there be a problem with the internal resistance of the stacked plate type altering line pressures and ultimately damaging the transmission or effecting shifting/drivability of the transmission? Also which one is supply and return lines going to and from the transmission? Thanks again for the reply.

A good stacked plate won't have enough restriction to damage anything.

If I knew which one was supply and which was return I'd tell you. But I don't. I never worked on the 6R transmission family.

Thankss again for the reply. One thought I had was disconnect a line and start the truck. If fluid comes out the radiator it is the return line. If fluid comes out the line then it is the supply line. Might make a little bit of a mess. One question I have is are the disonnect lines on the transmission designed to be removed and reinstalled multiple times or are they some sort of single use connector. I did buy the Lisle tool part 39960 to remove the line. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

They are designed to come apart and go back together many times. What you plan to do to find the direction will work, but as you said, might make a mess.
