Quick Question On Cowl Replacement

I am in the process of cutting out the side cowls to replace them, and I would just like to know how people are getting to the spot welds under the dash up by the body seam. Other than cutting out the rest of the cowl and getting to them from outside, is there another way that works? Or is it a rolled seam? Just would like a little guidance here if possible. Thank you. BTW, a '54 F100.

If you are replacing the whole piece you could do as I did and zip cut the the panel and then drill out the spot welds.

Thank you. Kind of figured that was the best way, I just didn't want to cut it completely up to the seam only to realize I screwed up and boxed myself into a corner.

When you weld it back in it's best to plug weld it from the top onto the new cowl piece.

Was just thinking how I was going to weld it back in! lol. Do you recommend this for ease, or structural stability? I was going to try plug welding it from the inside since the body is going to be cleared over bare steel. Going for the brushed steel look. I'm trying to hide any welds to make sure nothing shows through the clear.

The plug welding I'm referring to is done from underneath the dash, I also filled all my seams and welded them up as well. If you are not planning to fill your seams and only clearing bare metal you will need to find some clear seam sealer.

Good time to fill that seam in...if that's your preference.

Thanks John. The only issue I see with welding it from the top onto the new cowl is seeing what I am welding. From what I can tell, the cowl seam does not have any seam sealer on it, but it did where the firewall/toe board mates up. This are will be painted black as it's behind the fender/under the hood. I am only clearing bare metal on the surface, or jams where it can be seen from the outside. Under the hood and interior will be black. If I do need seam sealer on the cowl seam, I will get the clear stuff if I can find it.

It's not a comfortable position to plug weld up under the dash to get where the side cowl attaches but you can get in there. If you aren't filling that seam with weld you definitely want seam sealer there.

OK, thanks again. I guess I'll be looking for clear seam sealer.
