Hi all! I just bought a 1984 F250 XLT 6.9 idi with ATS turbo. It has roughly 90,000 original miles and other than the turbo everything is original. I am looking for any tips on maintenance and things to look for. I have read a post either on here or another website giving all the pros and cons of the 6.9 and am watching for those issues. Several questions I do have are this:
When should I think about replacing the injectors?
What kind are recommended and does the turbo play a part?
Diesel fuel is now low-sulphur... What additives can I use to get back the lost lubrication?
Any other tips would be great! Love the truck and would like to see it last!
Read the stickies, all your maintenance questions can be answered there. Rule of thumb for injection pumps and injectors is 100k some will go well past that but likely with lost performance.
100-150k for injectors AND pump. As far as additives, even the good ones (stanadyne) are not worth what you pay for them. They might extend the life some, but you would be way better off money wise to replace the pump and injectors every 100k, than buying the additive and going even 150k. In reality, you could expect to go an extra 10% i would think, for almost 50% more cost.
The problem is, unlike on other engines you don't have a clearly defined "this works" "oops, it failed" leaving you dead in the water for IP and Injector failure. Sure, it can happen, but 90% of the time the timing cam gets sloppy or sticks, it becomes harder to start, and ends up with smoke and low power.
And these things happen gradually, so you get used to it.
This is why you may want to proactively replace these wear items at the recommended interval... it may 'work', but it's probably not working quite right.
