I got my best EX mileage ever over the weekend, 17.1 on Friday. I'm running the '04 18" wheels with a 3" lift. The truck averages 15.5 on the highway up from 11 when I got it. I'd love to ride along with someone getting 18+ out of an Excursion. It's my goal...
Rich, the new motor is wonderful! No leaks, no oil usage, smooth as silk and purrs like a 7.3. I enjoy the ping pong ball trick when showing off my lack of blow-by. My MPG's have been consistent so I know it's part of owning the EX. I'll do break work over Christmas to ensure the slid pins and calipers aren't dragging.
It's time for another transmission flush, but all in all, she's wonderful! Thanks for asking.

Awesome! On my Ex I see 13-15 mpg around town and 16-18 on highway depending on speed & wind. With 80 mph speed limits I tend to suck it down...........
So then this happened. On a 49 mile trip. I tried to go easy on it though. It was about 65/35 highway/city driving. Drove about 68 on the highway. Maybe I'm just a lead foot.
I can't speak to your area but here in the Sierra and in Reno area they winter blend both gas and diesel so mileage really sucks on both fuels. 6000 foot average elevation and winter blend just sucks fuel.
This exactly my situation!!!! WHAT DID YOU DO FIND OUT?!. I’m about to sell this thing it’s been making me so frustrated. 1998 E350 diesel.
Purchased from original owner. Told me he always got 19 mpg. I buy it. Hand calculating every fill up, sure enough 19 mpg all day. Random day I go out to do my usual long freeway drive, fill up, start driving and notice the gauge starts to move right away. It would usually always stay at full for like 100 miles, now it just starts to drop right away.
getting like 15.5-16 now no matter what, I only highway drive at like 70-75. What did you find out?
Walker, i think a few of the guys from this original thread are no longer visiting this forum. I think Truckee still post here. Its an old thread tho 2015.
The vans should get better mileage than the trucks. They are less hp. Honestly you will probably get the better feedback and tips if you start a new thread. There are so many things that can contribute to fuel economy.
Yep, I'm still here and still driving the truck getting ****ty mileage that is worse in the winter. Due to winter blend, an 8' plow, snow in the bed and pushing snow at 6000' plus, it doesn't get much better in the summer either when you have lead foot and things that need to get done.
I hear this winter blend stuff all the time. I’m in Phoenix and we don’t get that. Plus I’ve owned a few diesels and I’ve had this for a year and a half, filling it up in winter and summer makes no difference in mpg.
But funny, your original post is exactly my situation. Roughly 19 mpg on highway all day no matter what. Overnight basically one day, I get like 15. And that’s that, can’t change it. And the way I noticed was the gauge wasn’t staying at full for the usual 80-100 miles that it usually would before moving. Now it just starts to move a few miles after fill up.
so nothing has changed with you then? Even in the “summer”?
