I have 1997 Ford F350 Automatic 4x4 Powerstroke and I have been trying to replace the starter I bought a starter off of ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...3629833&rd=1,1 I put the starter in and it seems like the starter will not disengage from the flywheel I have tried shiming the starter out some but it has been to no avail. Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem is? Is this even the right starter it does appear to be a little different?
Did you check the starter to see if the gear is stuck in the engagement position? The tolerance on the shaft the gear slides on is very close. Just the smallest amout of dirt or rust will stop it from moving. If you find that to be true it will need to be diassembled and cleaned. DO NOT OIL IT! It will just get worse.
I went to the auction where you got it and it is garanteed against DOA. Send it back if you aren't happy.
When you say different, In what way is it different? You may have the wrong one if it is very diff.
It seems like there is a slight difference around where the starter goes into the bellhousing but the way I understand it is that it the starter is one with three starter bolt holes it would be for my truck. I may be mistaken on that.
Remove the starter , You should purchase "Shims" for the starter ,it will give you the clearance you need ,you will be pleased,if not replace the starter solenoid on the fender wall.....!!
