valve springs

Im getting ready to install a camkit in my 1987 bronco and I have looked at a comp cams 268h high energy cam and Im wondering if I can get away without changing the valve springs? I know I should but Im getting tight for money. If I dont change the stock springs will it make that much differece that I will regret it.I got a price from comp cams for 205.00 for a camkit and 70.oo for valve springs. Im not really going to be racing, I just want a little more guts.Any input is appreciated. If you can recommend maybe a better camkit from some other company like crane I would appreciate that input

valve springs

I'm not sure this really answers your question but........

a few months ago I put a built 351w with that cam in one of my 70's trucks and was having all kinds of problems.

the truck would rev up to 3500 rpms and then die out in neutral or in gear. I tried adjusting the valves half a million times but I couldn't get the truck to rev over 4,000. when I finally got fed up and sent the engine back to the builder (under it's lifetime, unlimited mileage warenty). they checked the springs to find that some of them went soft (3 of them 50% of their correct strength). They also found that the misfiring at 3500 was tough on the bearings so they re-rebuilt the engine.

So after all that I come to the conclusion that it is very important to use the correct springs.

Also get good quality springs. the shop had put comp cams springs in and they went soft so they put better quality springs in. I recomend getting good quality springs and checking them before instaling to save your engine and save you a lot of frustration.

valve springs

You can get away using the stock valve springs. Don't be surprised when your valves start to float at 5000 RPM though. I am assuming you have a 302 in this. I personally have been shaking the piggy bank for a set of springs from Crane. For $114 you get springs, retainers, and locks. These springs are supposed to be the best bang for the buck in low lift cams such as these. I am running the E303 cam.
